Fill out an application, send in resume, and have an interview
How did you find this internship opportunity?

Who was your CTRS Internship Supervisor? Ashley Bowen
Did you know your CTRS Internship Supervisor before you applied for the internship?
I had a good relationship with my CTRS Internship Supervisor before I applied.
You interned during which semester? Winter
What did you like about your internship?
My favorite part of the internship has been having moments of discovery- where I’m working with a specific individual to accomplish a goal and you can just feel their excitement and their mind working in coordination with their body. It is so exciting and their smiles are the best! I love those “a ha!” moments throughout the internship where I’ve been leading a group and one person is just really struggling to figure out a certain skill or complete a task or something and then we just get a break through and everything clicks! I have seen that so many times and it is so rewarding. The participants face always lights up and you can see that they really understood and learned. All the hard work and frustration and repetition is so worth it in that moment. I would definitely recommend this internship to students interested in community recreation and adaptive sports. This internship gives you a lot of freedom to explore various activities and programs that you are interested in. I got to run a lot of activities and programs myself which taught me so much about what works and doesn’t work for me personally. I also learned about things I need to change or do differently. You get to work with various populations which is also awesome. We work in conjunction with a lot of other facilities like after-school centers, bowling alleys, field trips, other recreation centers, etc. This is valuable experience especially if you are going into some sort or coordinator or management position. My internship supervisor was the former president of URTA as well so I got exposure to some of the URTA meetings, planning, conference materials, etc. and I have enjoyed that as well.
What did you not like about your internship?
I did not particularly enjoy the commute from Provo to Murray every day (about 35-40 mins without traffic). Schedule wise, sometimes it is difficult to plan all of the various activities and coordinate with all of the facilities that I worked with. I definitely learned a lot while doing that but I was always driving back and forth between facilities during the day so it made the days seem long and some of the leaders or directors of the other facilities are rather disorganized so you have to really be flexible and stay on top of everything. Winter is a little bit slower in programming so if you want to be jam packed with activities and get 40 hours a week I would recommend interning here in the spring/summer.
Do you feel that your internship sufficiently prepared you to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)? Why?
Yes. My internship coordinator gave me a bunch of materials to use in prep for the NCTRC exam. She was really helpful in that. I learned about the APIE process and did a ton of programming on my own. I learned about various populations (age groups, disabilities, etc.) and loved getting exposure to more than one diagnosis.

You interned during which semester? Winter
What did you like about your internship?
It was super focused on high adventure outdoor recreation and gave me a lot of freedom to offer suggestions and make changes to the programming.
What did you not like about your internship?
It wasn't super structured and there was a good amount of down time where I didn't super know what to do. My supervisor wasn't super hands on and I had to be assertive in asking what I could help with/what I could do.
Do you feel that your internship sufficiently prepared you to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)? Why?
Yes. I learned a ton about the TR process and there were tons of resources there that prepared me for the NCTRC test.

Who was your CTRS Internship Supervisor? Jason Silva
Did you know your CTRS Internship Supervisor before you applied for the internship?
I sort of knew the person before I applied.
You interned during which semester? Winter
What did you like about your internship?
The recreation is adventure therapy, so it isn't just running a bunch of arts and crafts groups. Also, the supervisor is a bit hands-off, so you learn whatever you put into the internship.
What did you not like about your internship?
I am bad at working on projects from home, and that can be a lot of what this internship is. If you are good at working at home, then that would be great. I just need to get away from my home to be able to work better.
Do you feel that your internship sufficiently prepared you to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)? Why?
Yes. Because the supervisor is hands-off, I did everything. I had to run groups and figure out for myself if they were okay. I planned a project, and even though it didn't work, I was able to learn a lot.

Sent resume and cover letter to Tim Johnson.

Who was your CTRS Internship Supervisor? Tim Johnson
Did you know your CTRS Internship Supervisor before you applied for the internship?
I had a good relationship with my CTRS Internship Supervisor before I applied.
You interned during which semester? Winter
What did you like about your internship?
Incredible processing skills were taught as well as great clinical experience with team and clients. My supervisor became one of my best friends and was approachable with issues or questions. He was also very open to suggestions on how to improve the program. The population is boys with ASD and learning disorders ages 13-18 at residential treatment.
What did you not like about your internship?
I did not love writing notes. It is boring. I wish I had more experience developing programs. The program at Maple Lake is experiential task based and I would have liked to have more experience developing recreation/adventure based programming.
Do you feel that your internship sufficiently prepared you to become a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)? Why?
Yes. I learned to go with the flow and be open to what I am given. I learned flexibility and creativity. I previously was a hard-core planner so it was good for me to let my creativity take control and not worry so much about unnecessary details. My processing skills greatly improved throughout the internship which will be beneficial where ever I go.
